Israel is going to plant a forest dedicated to Ukraine. The Ukraine Forest will be the first one Israel has ever dedicated to another country. 300 acres of land for the forest will be allocated in the Southern part of Israel and an environmentalist organization will start planting the trees.
Ukraine’s Jewish and Muslim communities have been staunch supporters of Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity. The cooperation between Ukrainians, Jews and Muslims is helping to offset the tragic history of centuries of anti-semitism in Ukraine.
Ukraine is becoming a place where Jews, Muslims and people with some very distant connection to Christianity are working together in peace and kindness. That is beautiful and deserves to be celebrated with a forest.

Ukrainian and Jewish histories have so much in common! Millions of Jews and Ukrainians were killed by totalitarian regimes, but Ukraine and Israel are alive!

Only tangentially related but I just put in application with my dean for funding to go to a conference in Jerusalem in March. I will be giving a paper by the title “Wir hatten nichts: The Fate of ethnic Germans deported to Kazakhstan during World War II.”
