A Round of Applause

N’s colleagues gave him a round of applause for having the baby when he came to work after the leave. I haven’t gotten any applause so far even though I was the person shooting up insulin in 7 separate shots every day.

Life is unfair.

  1. Yes, I agree it’s very unfair.

My mother claims she has three birthdays: hers, mine and my brother’s. Nobody gainsays her.

Patronyms are pandering to men to make them feel included. :-p

  2. Seven shots a day plus how many finger picks to measure blood sugar levels, and limitations on what you could eat and how much, no matter how delicious something was — definitely a marathon you ran there. Clap, clap, clap!

  3. You have to think about the origins of this tradition. N got a round of applause for adding to his belongings. Like a wife, a child is another chattel.

Alternately you make the claim that that was just cover. A lot of civilization is about tying young men down into family-social networks (to keep them from spending too much time with each other with no supervision). The idea is to get them to channel their energies into economically productive activities rather than the mischief that independent young men get into on their own.

Getting married and having children are important milestones on that track which are celebrated to distract the man from the fact of his captivity….

This doesn’t apply to N’s situation very much (or at all) but it’s part of the background for such customs.

  4. Hey, are you going to have a super tuesday post? If so, can you please please name it ‘Goodbye Rubio Tuesday’? 😀

    1. No, Rubio is going to win by coming in third everywhere. That’s how he won the previous states. Maybe there should be an official position started for him with a title of “Almost the nominee.” He’ll do less damage there than in the Senate.
