Who Needs Microaggressions?

My university is holding a conference on microaggressions. And not with the goal of mocking them.

It’s the same university that didn’t have funds to pay for my trip to an actual scholarly conference at Oxford. The microaggressions conference is being organized by the same administrator who denied me that funding and is currently sending out anti-union missives, arguing that unions are divisive.

I want everyone to note that it isn’t students who are coming up with the initiative to give intellectual validity to the concept of microaggressions. It’s an anti-union administrator who is trying to distract our attention from organizing a collective political effort (a union of workers) towards interpersonal squabbles and grievances. See how masterfully it’s done? Now everybody’s attention will veer towards their personal identity (and attendant grievances) and away from the feeling of solidarity as workers.

Smart, eh?

  1. Recently administrators at my university organized a “What Works for Women at Work” workshop. They invited the author of the book, who gave such valuable nuggets of advice as “women are perceived poorly if they are too aggressive at work” and talked about “girl action plans”.

Sadly, I was the only woman faculty in the entire school who thought the whole thing was extremely inappropriate!

    1. Perhaps I am too much in politics mode, but woulld you both stipullate this is primarily (90%+) a liberal / democratic thing?

I am glad both of you realize its ridiculous, but this is justified evidence of the PC bias and witch hunt that many conservatives often complain. Just like you two are rational on this issue, I too understand the PC card is over played, but with stunning examples its important to acknowedge the obvious for future reference. Pretty sure you agree but thought it would be great to clarify!!

      1. The day when I meet a liberal student or administrator on my campus will be a day to celebrate. 🙂 We are Bible Belt. Nobody is liberal.

The students who shut me up in class because their feelings are hurt or because a B gives them PTSD are all very conservative and religious.

        1. No actual old fashioned grade grubbers claiming you destroyed their chances of getting into graduate school or holding on a scholarship?

          1. Admit to what? I’m simply sharing my own experience on my own campus. I’m sorry it doesn’t fit in with your preconceived notions but reality is more complex than what tabloids tell you.

  2. A few months ago I read an article that used the term “micro-assaults.” I’m waiting for it to escalate to “nano-wars” or “femto-genocide.”
