Small Government

So Rauner decided to throw a few crumbs at the public schools of Illinois and disbursed a small percentage of the money that the state owes them. This will possibly keep them afloat throughout the summer, after which the whole drama will keep repeating itself.

This is what the oft-repeated expression “small government” means, folks. Break up a single task into a million of small steps, accompany each step with endless drama, conflict and reams of paperwork, change your mind every five minutes, hire a small army of expensive bureaucrats and secretaries to keep track of the whole mess, and in the end fail to resolve anything.

The citizens of Illinois voted for “small government” and now have a government that doesn’t perform its basic functions because it’s too busy churning out conflicting orders and confusing paperwork.

  1. Do you never tire of strawmanning conservatives? Small govt. means lower taxes and spending as percentage of GDP (either national, state, local etc.) or income. It means less govt. employees, likely lower wages for some or many in govt.

These may be bad things, these may be good things (we are likely to disagree here), but that is what almost any person who advocates for “small govt.” would want.

Many also want inappropriate amounts of power for THEIR private economic interests. I abhor this type of “small govt” and capitalist who is really a crony. We likely agree here.

What you are seeing is the “tactics” needed to try to implement small govt as clearly those who benefit from “big govt” (at least relative to other people’s view of future state said govt.) are going to fight for their interests. They are entitled to do so, and in fact often they may be right!

I know you are a very, very smart individual and you know everything I just said, and this is super personal because your livelihood comes from the govt. I just want to be clear your constant arguments here against “small govt” are a disingenuous strawman. Perhaps you really aren’t aware of the clear articulation and logic which I laid out, in that case its a free lessonn.. this capitalist won’t charge you 🙂

Now I know you are being facetious. I said before, I don’t have a sense of humor and never know when people are trying to be funny.

“It’s not small government it’s the methods of those who want to implement small government” does nothing for your assertion that Clarissa is attacking straw men. You have not actually denied the truth of what Clarissa says is happening.

      1. Exactly. Nobody can refute the facts I’m referencing because they are a matter of public record. It is a fact of objective reality that Rauner hired a $100K secretary for his wife and a group of $140K-$160K secretaries for himself immediately after getting elected. It is also undeniable that we have no budget, that he refused to do the line-by-line budget negotiations, that he chose to disburse a small amount to keep us going without a budget, etc.

I wish somebody at least tried to explain how hiring an enormously expensive secretary for the governor’s wife can be called “small government.” I’m tired of empty verbiage. Let’s go to the facts.

I keep explaining that this is not true but it’s not sinking in. WE are not getting any money from the government. My salary comes from student tuition. And I have explained that at least 5 times already. The person who is actually getting paid by the government is the secretary of Rauner’s stupid wife. So yes, this is very personal to her. She is trying to rob the entire state to pay for her entourage.
