Friday Mini Link Encyclopedia

Racism is naked in South Africa – literally.

College hiring is the best in years.

The British Left has a Jewish problem.

An English or literature/cultures/linguistics major is about as employable as an economics, math/statistics, or political science/global studies/area studies major.  The English major is about as likely to still be seeking employment upon graduation as a chemistry major, and less likely to be seeking employment than the earth, society and environment major. English majors are far less likely than psychology majors to be headed directly to graduate school; on the other hand, they have a much higher rate of initial employment.”

Another ridiculous freakout on the part of rich, bratty students.

  1. I generally like Malik’s work. But, the issue of Jews and anti-semitism and the British Left which would not have included the Labour Party during the years I lived in London are not anything new. There are a lot fewer Jews in the UK than the US particularly as a percentage of the population. Also unlike the US prominent British Jewish leftists like Tony Cliff (Yigael Gluckstein) tended not to emphasize their Jewish identity. Instead like Rosa Luxembourg and Leon Trotsky earlier they played up their identification as international socialists. So their presence as another minority with specific identity based interests in UK leftists politics is extremely underdeveloped compared to the US. The upshot is that British leftists sometimes say things about Jews often in conflation with Israeli actions that they wouldn’t about Muslims or other minorities. The US left has the same problem in mirror image with Muslims and for some of the same reasons in reverse.

  2. Greetings from India.

What is this I’m hearing about Clinton courting republican donors, and also the news of her super smart campaign coming up with ‘Dangerous Donald’ as Trump’s nickname? Seriously, is she trying to lose this fucking election? Trump would fucking pay for a moniker like that.

Trying to copy Trump’s shtick works out so well, just ask Rubio.

As for her trying to woo republican donors, I think that’ll really depress the liberal vote in november, which’ll have disastrous consequences down ticket. She’ll still win, of course, but this is such an awesome chance to retake the house and the senate. I hope she doesn’t fuck this up.

      I know, I’m worried, too.

Exactly. I switch off the TV every time I hear about the Clinton strategy to defeat Trump because I get into a vile mood. Everything they’ve come up with so far is dumb as door nails.

      Have fun in India, though!

      1. Now that her nomination is certain, it would’ve been a good idea to make some conciliatory gestures towards voters of her own party that didn’t support her during the primaries. Give Bernie supporters something to look forward to in November.

But no, her first move is to make a beeline for Republican donors to convince them that she’d be a better candidate for them. What the fuck is this shit.

Because politics has become so polarized, there’s nothing to be gained from trying to convert voters on the opposite side, or going for the mythical ‘undecideds’. It’s all about voter turnout.

        1. Yes. I agree. Clinton needs to pivot left to get the Sanders supporters to the polls.

          1. She has moved as far left as she can without antagonizing the rest of the country. This is the general election, not the far left election.

  3. How do you expect Hillary to take on Trump, when she can’t even put a softie like Bernie away? He (Bernie) is going to fight her all the way to the convention.

Back when the democrats were a hodge-podge of northern progressives and southern conservatives their conventions could turn into tangled metaphorical bloodbaths as they were determined to fight each other as much as the republicans (who were a lot more disciplined).

Maybe that’s what we’re headed back to?

If discord in the party turns into discord on the streets during the demo-convention then welcome president Trump.

\ IAF strikes Hamas targets in Gaza after rocket fired at Israeli civilians.
Rocket falls in open area in Eshkol, causing no injuries or damage; it is the first rocket over the past week to target civilians rather than IDF forces, after some 16 mortar shells were launched at troops operating near the border (in search for border-crossing tunnels).

    And then something even “nicer”:

Gaza sewage poisons coastline, threatens Israel
Gaza doesn’t have enough electricity to run its water treatment plants, so it’s dumping its sewage into the sea, threatening the Israeli coastline. Palestinian political infighting is a major factor keeping the electricity off.

    Somebody from USA commented:

\ Hamas Gaza attack tunnels aimed to invade Israel and kill Jewish civilians did not get a smidgen of coverage that sewage did? To build those Hamas used Israel supplied 160.000 tones of cement allocated to rebuild destroyed structures in Gaza. Hamas stole the cement, but Hamas is also responsible as government of Gaza sewage. Is Hamas can build cemented attack tunnels why not use the talent to build a sewage system?
