I Think We Have a Veep

This is an email I just got from Hillary’s campaign. I guess we all know what this means.

πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’πŸ’πŸ’πŸŒžβ˜‰πŸŒœπŸŽ‰πŸŽŠπŸŽ„πŸ†

Sorry, I just discovered all these emoticons and need time to get it out of my system.

      1. I am kind of getting you. Lack of context (i.e. the fact that over here the POTUS race isn’t directly important and is kind of taking a back seat to Brexit anyway) makes it impossible to tell what is obvious to those who know the context.

  1. I hope that you’re right about Warren being Hillary’s VP pick. That will accomplish at least a couple of good things:

It will take Warren out of the Senate, where she’s been an effective advocate for her far-left, anti-Wall Street policies, and put her in a totally useless job where she’ll have NO influence at all except what President Hillary, if elected, allows her.

The Republican governor of Massachusetts will appoint a Republican to replace her in the Senate, and that will increase the Republicans’ chances of holding onto the Senate in November.

      1. I got a similar fundraising email abot a week ago and have the same thought as you: Warren for VP.

And EW would make sence. She could mollify Sanders supporters and potentially energize the youth vote. That being said, as Dreidel hints, taking Warren out of the Senate is risky.

I am thinking that Clinton may go with a safer bet at the end of the day. I am not enthused about it but I personally predict that Tim Kaine will be tapped to be her running mate. In my personal opinion, I think Julian Castro would be an excellent choice.

      2. Green?? Well, I am partially color-blind — but those matching outfits sure look blue to me. πŸ™‚

  2. First, whatever happened to announcing during the convention?

Second, the choice is not really hers to make. Technically the delegates can elect whoever they want to be VP candidate. It’s been a while since they’ve chosen someone who wasn’t the candidate’s choice (democrats 1944?) but you never know (this being such a weird election)

Third, I’m not that sure that a C/W whitehouse would be that good for American women. A woman (that Clinton professes to admire) in Germany is presiding over the biggest de facto loss of womens’ rights in living memory.

      1. My gut says EW wouldn’t be a good choice just because she’s too similar to Hillary. Ideally an all female ticket could work but not this one.

I’d say she needs someone visibly younger (but not too young) that brings something to the ticket that she doesn’t.

But that’s the conventional wisdom which is often not operating this election cycle.

How…. nationalistic (for lack of a better word) is EW? The developing split in politics in Europe and the US is nationalist vs globalist (not the best labels but close enough for government work).

As one person pointed out, to a surprising degree Trump and Sanders appeal to the same people (more nationalist in orientation) and the big difference is age (sanders appeals more to the young and trump to the older).

HC needs someone with serious nationalist cred. If that’s EW then okay. if not then she nees to keep looking

        1. Yes, this is a great way to look at the elections pretty much everywhere today: is this candidate in favor of burying the putrid corpse of the nation-state and moving on OR in favor of resuscitating the glorious nation-state and trying to keep it on life support for as long as possible.

Hillary pretends to be part of the resuscitate camp because Bernie forced her to but she’s faking it.

That’s a very fatalistic way of looking at things.

The faster the transition from nation state to whatever comes next the more jarring the dislocations will be.

Part of fluidity at present seems to be transferring from rule of law (one aspect of the nation state) to law by identity This is one reason why things like Rotherham and Cologne happen. Is this something you really want to encourage and speed up?

            1. Transferring from rule of law to law by identity is a fascinating idea. I need to think about this. What a great way to put it.

Zygmunt Bauman would kiss you for this. πŸ™„
