Friends Against

There is an expression in Russian “to be friends against somebody.” It’s describes a friendship that’s held together by nothing but a joint hatred for somebody else. 

I keep remembering this expression every time I turn on the RNC. If there were no shared Hillary hatred  (and Obama hatred, of course), these folks would have nothing to bind them together. There is no emotional response from the crowd to anything but Hillary. There are no thoughts and ideas about anything but Hillary. There’s more Hillary here than there will be at the DNC.

  1. It’s scary. Completely mainstreaming the idea that your political opponents should be put in prison, that they deserve the firing squad (both things said last night to wild cheers). Also, Christie’s statement that all Obama appointees will be purged from government when Trump becomes president. What the fuck, is this US or fucking Turkey? Is this the behavior of 50% of the political class in the most advanced and powerful nation on earth? Jesus christ.

    1. Completely flawed analogy. You’re suggesting GOP voters rallying behind him because he’s the party nominee even though they dislike him personally? Well, that’s just nonsensical. He won, you know. And quite handily at that.

      Bernie lost. His supporters, which constitute the minority of the party, have the choice to hold their noses and vote for him for the sake of party unity. That’s what the losing candidate’s supporters do.

      Look, I know there’s tribalism in the political process. No surprises there. But there’s got to be something else that excites you. First day of the convention: make america safe again. Actual topic discussed: Hillary Hillary Hillary. Second day of the convention: make america work again. Actual topic discussed: Hillary Hillary Hillary.

      Which is weird, because Trump apologists have always told us that their base is not racist, they’re just upset about national security and the economy and the unfair trade deals, etc. When it comes time to discuss these issues when the whole world is watching we get masturbatory fantasies about executing Hillary by a firing squad and how she’s a disciple of Lucifer.

      Where was the discussion of the economy, Dreidel? Where was Trump’s jobs plan?

      Your party has conditioned its base to just not care about policy, how it is made, how it is executed. Right wing radio spewing agitprop 24/7 about Vince Foster, Death Panels, BENGHAZI is how you get Trump.

      Remember how you breathlessly informed us about Loretta Lynch meeting Bill Clinton in an airport? That’s the sort of meaningless garbage people like you get excited about. Listening to ‘news’ 24/7 and still so tragically uninformed about the world. As Trump would say: SAD!

      1. That’s what I’m saying! I’d like to hear about the Republican platform. Theres got to be some kind of substance to it. I can list items from Hillary’s plan for half an hour and still not run out. But at the RNC I’m not hearing what will actually be done if Trump is elected.

    If you don’t think that a lot of people are going to vote for Hillary because they think Trump is worse, you haven’t been paying attention to the news.

    Why don’t you channel your adolescent hatred of everybody who has a different opinion from you into something useful, like voting for the candidate of your choice in November?

    As passionate as you are about politics, you ARE registered to vote, aren’t you?

  5. I have voted in EVERY single Presidential election and every State and House election save one since I was eligible to vote.

    This is the first party primary I’ve voted in. I will be ecstatic to vote in November.

    I will also be VERY happy to do voter protection.

    Look, I’ve watched umpteen Democratic and Republican primary debates. They have no real platform because the platform or the brand of the party is almost beside the point. There were real distinctions between Bernie and Hillary they both tried vigorously to draw. Meanwhile, with the Republican debates we got stupid jokes about hands and dicks as if they were auditioning for political RPF slash instead of leader of the free world. No comparison!

    1. I agree. Hillary and Bernie debated really crucial issues. There was a lot of substance to the discussion, and I enjoyed it greatly. I find many flaws in the college plans of both Hillary and Bernie but they at least have plans. They are trying to figure out how to solve the problem. Where is the Republican plan for anything other than “cut taxes and jobs will magically materialize”?
