British Airways has found a way to make travel even more uncomfortable. Truly, when there is a will, there is a way.
A gay man writes about the disturbing resurgence of conversion therapy.
Economists are horrified at the prospect of Trump being elected.
Folks, do check it out. There is a fellow who is an absolute genius. He draws mental illness. And the catch is that the drawings will tell you nothing unless you are in the risk group for this illness. None of the drawings meant anything to me. Except one that felt like a punch in the gut. And what do you think? It’s OCD which I totally tend towards.
[Funny photo] Merkel is meeting tiny little Putin.
University of Florida is going to be offering counseling for students offended by Halloween costumes.
And this is the kind of horrible, horrible police we get here in St Louis.
So big deal — the U.S. military has being doing exactly what that poor writer is whining about for decades.
When the U.S. military starting sending troops to overseas assignments by air instead of on ships, the military chartered civilian airlines who refitted jumbo airliners like the 747 with almost double the number of seats normally on those airplanes, running tiny little seats from the tail of the plane right up to the crew cockpit door.
Every seat on every flight was 100% occupied. Try spending 16 hours on a flight to Japan under those conditions, and you’ll have something to bitch about.
But at least the troops didn’t have to pay for the trip. And at the time, very few people on active duty were fat, so they did fit in the seats.

When one gets paid to do it, it’s different from when one pays to.
But hey, it’s been a while since you mentioned fat people. I started worrying if you were OK! 😉

Military meals (except under combat conditions) were delicious, all-you-can-eat banquets.
The military was known for wasting money, but never food. It’s practical statement at every meal was: “Take all you want — eat all you take!”
I usually skipped breakfast (meant getting up too early) and lunch (the only time I could do paperwork without being bothered), and then pigged out at supper — after which, I’d usually voluntarily go running ten miles nonstop when the workday was over, just to burn off the stress of the day.
(Purely anecdotal statement: Exercise never made the slightest difference in my weight, whether I was running ten miles day, or doing NO excessive exercise at all. The only thing that ever effected my weight — slightly, below predictions — was the amount of calories I took in.)
My last assignment was a five-year gig at a mixed military-civilian complex in North Chicago, where the civilian workers brought in cakes/donuts, you name it on an almost daily basis.I have to admit that my 6′-1” frame bloomed up to 183 lb. But since retiring 18 years ago, my weight has returned to its standard 6′-1,” 17o lb. skinny frame.
At my age, I do a single daily exercise to maintain muscle tone, bone density, insulin sensitivity, cardiovascular fitness, core body strength and balance, and a tall, slender posture. But I can do all that in a single, aggressive, FIT-centered, five-minutes-to exhaustion routine — that’s all it takes, and then I can get get on with my day. The very brief exercise period affects my fitness and my appearance, and my psychological sense of well- being, but not my weight at all.
(DISCLAIMER!: My anecdotal experience is not medical advice!! This is strictly what works for me!)

Absolutely true about exercise and weight. I’m all for exercise but it has zero effect on weight. I went from being a couch potato of a lifetime to working out 5 times a week. It was fantastic for my health but had no impact at all on my weight.
And once I stopped the workout schedule after Klara was born, I ended up at the ER on the verge of a stroke. The weight is exactly the same throughout.

Neither Hillary nor Trump looks in particularly fit shape to me. But with the state-of-the-art medical care available today to those who can afford it, both candidates are likely to survive in competent shape for the next eight years.
If either is elected and goes prematurely senile, both of their running mates are kids in their still very fit fifties who have plenty of time to grow up!

As Corey Robin, whom you hate and whom I love commented on the article above:
“After Election Day, this will be the real question for liberals and the left: Will we settle for a corporate identity politics of symbols and circuses or will we create what the culinary workers in Nevada have created, a genuinely multiracial working class politics of justice and solidarity?”

Oldie but a goodie. IMF beginning to cast doubts on neoliberalism.

“Ostry, Loungani, and Furceri’s “disquieting conclusions” are as follows:
It is pretty hard to actually establish, “when looking at a broad group of countries” whether neoliberal policies have actually helped growth.
The increase in inequality is “prominent”.
Increased inequality caused by specific parts of neoliberalism “hurts the level and sustainability of growth.”
…
The increase in inequality engendered by financial openness and austerity might itself undercut growth, the very thing that the neoliberal agenda is intent on boosting. There is now strong evidence that inequality can significantly lower both the level and the durability of growth.”

Clinton is definitely the canidate of fluidity, she does not distinguish between secure and non-secure technology or between people with and without security clearance in handling classified material either.
She routinely had her immigrant maid (not clear if she’s a citizen yet but definitely had no security clearance) to print out classified material.

On the conversion therapy link. That’s an absolutely brilliant connection. I’d read years ago from a terf that accepting the trans party line* inevitably leads to the destruction of gay identity.
The trans party line seems to facilitate a new way for controlling parents to bully their non-conformist kids into some semblance of orthodoxy. Blech
*as opposed to accepting trans people as individuals making their way in the world as best they can

On the mental illness pics: The one that creeped me out te most (not major creep out but more unsettling than the others) was Dependent Personality Disorder.
After looking it up I had to admit that I’m a little confused. Is it supposed to speak to what the person is prone to or what they fear? I’ve never been accused of not giving other people space or living through them but I’ve always been creeped out by clinging, dependent people.

Teen terrorist gets 12 years in prison over Pisgat Ze’ev stabbing
Ahmad Manasra, who was 13 when he and his 15-year-old cousin stabbed 13-year-old and 21-year-old Israelis, also ordered to pay NIS 180,000 in compensation to his two victims; ‘the fact they are minors does not confer immunity … particularly when a serious crime is committed,’ judge determines.
…
Manasra was convicted in May of two counts of attempted murder and one count of arms possession after he and 15-year-old cousin Hassan Mahani stabbed and critically wounded 13-year-old Naor Shalev Ben-Ezra and wounded 21-year-old Yosef Ben-Shalom. Mahani was killed in the attack.
The judges rejected Manasra’s claim that he did not plan on killing his victims, only wound them, defining it “not credible” and noting that “the defendant was involved in the decision to kill Jews, including a minor. This is part of a series of deadly stabbings that logic cannot accept were done without the intention to kill.”

I do not know how true it is, but just read:
\ Israeli-Americans overwhelmingly support Trump
New numbers show Trump winning 75% of the Israeli-American vote, which is largely based out of Judea and Samaria.
Like last election’s Republican candidate Mitt Romney, this year’s Republican candidate Donald Trump has succeeded in winning the support of 75% of Israeli-Americans. The reason is suspected to be Trump’s massive support for Judea, Samaria, and the haredi sector; however, Trump is also supported by most of the irreligious and traditional sectors as well.
…
Half of the voters are National Religious, many of them living in Judea and Samaria. There are also countless haredi Jews among the voters.
Previous votes, which did not include residents of Judea and Samaria, also showed Trump in the lead.
…
The polls have continued fluctuating, giving Trump, then Clinton, then Trump the lead vote. However, neither candidate has the support of a true majority.
