A Weapon of God

From a Kremlin propagandist:

Trump was sent to us by God as a weapon that Putin will use to destroy all evil in the world, once and for all.

  1. Also, after reading about Putin’s successes on your blog, I got the impression he is capable of being a much better president than Trump. If he ever wanted to be one, of course.

Right now it looks like Putin is both smarter and with higher degree of self-control.

    1. The organization that put Putin in power is, indeed, composed of very smart people. The trick with the fake losing of the Cold War was brilliant. And propelling right-wing ultra nationalist governments to power in Europe and the US is very well-done.

  2. On an unrelated note, could you advise please which resources to use in order to explain the technique of close reading of a short story (to a beginning univerity student)? I tried to explain, but failed. Probably since I do not have some kind of algorithm myself.

  3. How do you know what to pay attention to, how to begin?

I identify the themes of the story and then look how they are connected, whether some significant words (with several meanings, probably) appear in an excerpt / story.

    How do you teach it?

  4. “Unfortunately, I’m very very bad at teaching how to read. It happens automatically for me and I find it hard to explain the mechanism.”

-I don’t know, you explained it to me once very well. You told me to start by finding lines and passages that really resonate. I usually start there, and then figure out what exactly resonates with me and why. Then I go through the work again and look at ways the text surrounding the really powerful passages support that. I look at flow and syntax in particular (the last class I did close readings for was a poetry workshop), as well as line breaks and alternative meanings of lines and particular words/phrases. That’s about what I do when I have an assignment. It doesn’t break down that nicely when I don’t have to mark the text or plan a paper or something.
