California Secessionists

Talking about clowns, a bunch of folks started a petition for California to secede. I’m sure it’s the same people who ridiculed Texas secessionists for years.

  1. Dunno what the folks here are thinking for that one, but an independent California would become a hell-hole for Republicans because the farmers and small businessmen etc, would be outnumbered by the voters in urban and progressive areas like LA, The Bay Area, etc.

I thought that was the whole idea. That is, I thought this was a democrat inspired idea to separate from the icky folks who elected Trump.

You’re saying it’s a Republican idea? That would be weird-o-rama, even for California….

      1. Problem is, when the nation-state is weakened, the welfare state fades away. Try being concerned about welfare with no clean water, no public education, no health care, etc.

        1. Harry Lime: In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed. They producedd Michaelangelo, da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did they produce? The cuckoo clock.

So which is more relevant to actual human needs and public welfare — art on a wall, or practical inventions like the clock?

Before there was a nation-state, the cavemen did a great job with prehistoric cave paintings. That talent didn’t get them very far, until they starting organizing.

      2. “My mother taught me that humanity is my concern, not nation-states”

Then she did a poor job. Nation states (for all their many and serious faults) have seen the greatest expansion of human liberty and created the highest standards of living for the largest number of people in the history of the world.

Whatever follows the nation state is absolutely guaranteed to be worse for about 90% of all people.

  2. I maaay have agreed with someone who said that when the election results were coming in, but I don’t really think it’s a good idea. At least not unless things get to literal Nazi Germany levels of bad.

    1. ” they think Trump would deport the Indians?? But even he never promised any such atrocity.”

not gonna happen because when all is said and done the president doesn’t have that much direct power (remember ‘checks and balances’ from Social Studies?)

Think of Obama. The entire reason he won the nomination over Clinton was that he was “against” the Iraq invasion while evil, mean Hillary had voted for it in the Senate. (That was exactly the party line in 2008).

Did Obama get the US out of Iraq or Afghanistan or prevent the US from turning a mundane North African Strongman State into hell on earth?

No. If he couldn’t deliver on the issue that got him into office then what chance does Trump have to enact a bunch of stuff that he almost certainly would oppose?

  3. Something tells me that the Silicon Valley honchos behind this “movement” aren’t willing to fight, bleed and die for their beliefs. IOW, it’s all b.s. because the only way California or any state will become independent is through force of arms. The Civil War settled that issue for good.
