Conservatives are acting embarrassingly, too. When they don’t lash out in inexplicable rage, they whine and moan that they need safe spaces and that their fee-fees are hurt by somebody else not organizing celebrations for them.

There is so much anger and pouting going on among Trump supporters that you’d think their candidate lost. It’s weird when people whose side lost go to pieces but when those who won do it, that’s just bizarre.

Will we spend the next 8 years hearing conservatives flip out and ask for safe spaces?

Actually, this makes sense. Very few people in the end voted for Trump. They voted for change, and Trump appeared the only way to do that. Many who voted for him don’t actually like or trust him. So, yep, we’re going to hear them complaining. The complaints will grow as they see who he appoints to his Cabinet, most of whom are rumored to be DC insiders.

Well I think that Trump winning was traumatic for religious conservatives. in the US.

Trump at heart doesn’t seem very conservative. He’s a secular populist with some aggressive nationalism thrown in.

His victory points out just how wrongheaded the conservative approach has been. Their guys were Cruz and/or Jeb, both of whom Republicans couldn’t get rid of fast enough.

Aren’t the reactions on all sides just more examples of people vomiting out their private trauma into public space a la Bauman?

  Absolutely, it’s all about the private aggressively colonizing the public. I read an article today that criticized the Clinton campaign for concentrating on Trump’s personality instead of going against his policy positions. As if there are that many voters who prefer to hear an analysis of tariff policies instead of a discussion of grabbing pussies.

How is this different than the previous eight years? When your identity is fragile, people having other identities and feelings in public are having them at you, constantly. When it’s not, you hardly care. Being constantly aggrieved has worked very well for them. Why would they drop it?

Pfft. What trauma? They voted for the guy. They didn’t vote for Cruz or any of the other candidates with better pretenses to religiosity. The people who get really animated to vote in these primaries are religious conservatives. They didn’t stay home in the general. Trauma, my ass. That was self- inflicted and they have Pence. I’ve had to hold my nose to vote for people in the past but I didn’t go around acting traumatized.

  They gave him his full support. Jerry Falwell point blank said I don’t care if tomorrow Trump is accused of rape, I’m still voting for him. James Dobson gave him his full support (‘it’s not about character’) when during clinton’s impeachment it was ‘if a man can’t be faithful to his wife how can he faithful to the country?’.

  I agree with Shakti. Rod Dreher, a religious fellow whose blog I read religiously, turned his nose up at Trump before the election but now it looks like he’s the trumpiest Trumper of all Trumpers. And so are his ultra religious correspondents.

  Actually, I disagree with the mike67 fellow completely. The US media were fawning over Trump slavishly. He is anti-elite like I’m a ballerina. He is the personification of the elites. Bored rich people gave the presidency to a bored rich guy. That’s all there is to it. As rich elites, they know that national governments increasingly lose power to do much. So at least they should entertain. Hillary was “boring, not exciting” because a President these days needs to crack jokes and entertain. Obama actually left his job and went on the trail, giving comedy shows. And everything was just fine. So what message are people getting? Presidency is about cracking them up.

Looks like both Trump and his voters did not want him to win:

Actually, Trump is 70 years old, has spent the last 30 years “cosseted within Trump Tower,” and, as many Israeli commentors noted, is about to experience a decline in his standard of living with the move into the White House, unlike most other American presidents.

Why did he decide to run for a president in the first place?
