Remembrance

Today is the day of Remembrance of the victims of Holodomor in Ukraine. If there were a way to argue somehow that Americans were to blame for it, then it would flatter them and they’d care. There’d be funding to study it, professorial positions in Ukrainian studies, discussions in the press. But since nobody has found a way to make it about them, they don’t give a toss.

    1. Victims are only valuable inasmuch as they can be used to support some pre-existing worldview. Americans are obsessed with seeing themselves as godlike. Anything that isn’t about their godlike role is seen almost as an affront.

      1. I know this is your assessment but I think where it really applies is re Holocaust victims where US makes itself out as more heroic and more positively involved than it was. There’s a lot that happens that really is largely fault of US policies and corporations / organizations and people don’t know-don’t care
