When that happens to me, I buy a cheap backpack to use as checked luggage. I have done this at least twice in Mexico.

I was hoping to get a tote bag, like the ones all conferences give out but the MLA is so cheap. It isn’t providing any goodie bags.

You can get an appropriately sized cardboard box and ship the books with USPS using the Media Mail option. That feature of USPS is so nice. As long as it’s just books (or other media) inside the box the shipping rates are very very low.
Take the extreme case of shipping a 10 lb package coast to coast (say, my house to NY, NY). Priority mail is about $40, but media mail is just $6.50. For 20 lbs, priority mail is like $68 vs the media mail price of $11.
You don’t even need to go to the post office. You can print a shipping label online from your hotel’s printer, slap it on a box and ask the front desk to mail it for you. Any semi-decent hotel deals with incoming and outgoing USPS mail daily.
