This is me in first grade:

We had to wear these white collars to school every day. Imagine keeping them clean and starched in Soviet conditions. In the photo, I’m wearing a festive day school uniform but the white collars had to be worn daily.

What always got me were the giant ass ribbons they put in schoolgirls’ hair…. what was that about?

My mother bought me a big set of these ribbons for Klara. It took effort to explain why that wasn’t happening.

Imagine an American kid wearing this at school.

    A beautiful photo.

You know, both my mother and I thought it was visible in this picture that you had Jewish roots.

So tiny, but so serious. Absolutely adorable.
