If a book is good, I would pay $85 for it. Do you collect any royalties from sales?? You should.

I’ll collect royalties once we sell over the first 750 copies. But good luck selling them at this price.

i don’t know if you can share (or if you have and I missed it) but is it published by an in house (your university) or by an industry publishing house? And did you have much of a say in that or does your contract with the university stipulate who publishes and the price etc.? Very curious on how some of the process works.

It’s published by Bucknell UP and they are an imprint of Rowman and Littlefield. I have no control over anything but the actual text and neither does Bucknell. R&L controls everything that has to do with production, promotion, sales, etc. But – and this is great – they have zero input on the text itself. Meaning, that there is no censorship on their end.

Do you know how the price of an “academic” book like yours is determined? Does the publisher assume limited sales because of the esoteric subject matter, and therefore set a high per-volume price in order to at least break even in recouping publication costs?

And that’s the sort of thing that leads to public access laws…. (that is requiring academics to make their work freely available to the public).

This is the kind of remedy that’s worse than the original problem. It’s ensuring that there will be no scholarship at all.

Yes, but it doesn’t come out of a vacuum… The academic publishing model actively adds fire to the “I could do this better!” model…. and doesn’t care to explain to the plebs why it’s necessary. Bad thinking all the way around…
