Freedom to Want

As Schopenhauer said, even when people are free to do what they want, they are not free to want what they want.

  1. “even when people are free to do what they want, they are not free to want what they want.”

On an emotional level, this cuts close to the bone for me.

On an analytic level, I think that you’re free to want what you want, but getting it is something else entirely. I think “getting what you want” is pretty freaking rare.

Then again, what would we do if we always got what we wanted?

    1. I think this is not what Schopenhauer is talking about, though. This is about the construction of desire, about mediation, etc. — right?
