A campaign is underway in Spain to get a million people to fly the national flag simultaneously. They only have the population of 40 million, so it’s a big number.
I don’t need to explain to my regular readers why this is an important gesture.

Is that just intended to really annoy the Catalans?

In today’s infantilized zeitgeist all political gestures are aimed at annoying some rival.
For what it’s worth, if the Catalans do ever get their referendum they might be surprised at the results, previous run throughs have been political theater to help the independistes feel good about themselves, but most comprehensive surveys show that a small majority favors the current status quo.
Unless the independistes find a way to keep a lot of people from voting it might be Scotland all over again.

The separatists (whether the Catalans or the Basques) are always there but this current round of the drive (because it’s far from being the first one) seems more linked to the crisis that won’t end.
