This is the type of street anarchy that routinely happens where I live. Here is video from 6 Oct showing Antifa directing traffic in downtown & threatening people who don’t obey with violence. Mayor @tedwheeler, who really runs this town? pic.twitter.com/OgjZNByxat

Portland mayor Ted Wheeler’s referral to Columbus Day as ” Indigenous People’s Day” says all that you need to know about his politics.

The city of Columbus, Ohio now no longer calls it Columbus Day. Ridiculous.

Whoever uses the phrase “indigenous people” has a personal soft spot in my heart. I teach about the indigenous cultures of the Americas a lot. And it takes a long time to convince students to stop saying “Indians” and say indigenous people instead.

Oh, come on, Clarissa, you’re part of the language police now?
The only truly “indigenous people” were the humanoids who dropped out of the trees and started walking upright on the African subcontinent about three million years ago, before they moved on to unoccupied lands around the earth.
The North and South American Indians were immigrants to the Western Hemisphere just like everybody else — they just got here first.

God, don’t make me repeat the lecture here at this late hour. The indigenous are not Indians. Columbus initially thought he arrived in India and kept looking for elephants and tigers, the poor tool. Then he changed his mind. Several times. We know more than he did and are aware that the indigenous had nothing to do with India.

They aren’t indigenous, either — just crossed over the Bering Strait from the Eurasian landmass a few millennia before Columbus got lost.
The German language, which I prefer for its precision over English, at least makes a distinction: Asian Indians are called “Inder,” and Native American immigrants are referred to as “Indianer.”

“convince students to stop saying “Indians”
I’m not sure how important that is in English, but in Spanish it’s very important to not use Indio because it’s (or at least was) a vicious racial slur in some Latin American countries (esp the Andes). People there prefer ‘indigena’ or ‘autoctono’or just the name of their group since indigenous solidarity doens’t necessarily exist…
Similarly ‘mi hijo’ as a form of address to an indigenous man was something like referring to a Black man as ‘boy’ (once common in the US South).

That’s exactly it. Thank you.

I would vote Yes in spite of the funding concerns. The jails are overcrowded, it doesn’t help anybody to put more people in. What are you thinking about it?

I was planning to vote yes, even though apparently Mark Zuckerberg supports it (yuck.) Throwing everybody in jail didn’t work during the ’80s and it won’t work now.

Exactly. I’m with you on this one.
