One habit of daily life that I don’t understand is putting fruit and bread into the refrigerator. It makes them taste horrid!

I thought it was a Russian thing, to be honest. But my sister’s husband is Peruvian and she says he does it, too. I feel strangely relieved.

I also have a weird habit, which is putting cinnamon and cumin seeds into kefir. It makes the kefir look ugly. But I like the taste.

When I was a kid, we kept the bread in the fridge because otherwise our cat would rip into the bag and eat one bite out of each slice.

Now, we keep it in the fridge/freezer, because I bake once every week or two, 6-8 loaves, and we live in a warm, humid climate so that’s just how you keep it from getting moldy before it can be eaten.

We keep most fruit in the refrigerator because we buy it in bulk and refrigeration keeps things like apples and clementines from going bad too soon. I only refrigerated bread one summer, but that was because it was molding very quickly and it was very hot and humid.

    “bread into the refrigerator”

I first head of that when I was a child and it seemed like the weirdest thing ever.
Now I occasionally do that (like others said mostly to keep some types of bread from going moldy in some kinds of weather).
Some fruit belongs in the fridge and others don’t.

Yes. Cucumbers, tomatoes, bananas, and peaches should never go in the fridge. Watermelon is better chilled, though. Not because you have to, but because it’s good!

Some people think grapefruit also tastes better chilled, but I like it better at room temperature. I guess it’s a matter of personal preference.

I keep most fruit on the counter, because my husband snacks on it all the time and I don’t have to worry about it going bad.

yeah, citrus doesn’t like being chilled, IMO. I do make sure to refrigerate any cold-season vegetables, like cabbage and broccoli and lettuce, but most fruits and veg don’t benefit from it. My FIL cooks grapefruit, and it is quite nice that way, though I still prefer it room temp 🙂
