When I tell people I’ve taken up painting, they react as if I said I’ve taken up pedophilia. “Yeah, haha, very funny. What a silly joke.”
I don’t know why people react this way. Is it because I’m utterly lacking in talent? I know I am but so what? I’m not hoping to make my name as an artist. I know I suck. It’s the process I’m after.
There’s a bunch of really great videos on philosophy and history that I want to listen to. But I can’t just listen and do nothing in the meantime. I get terribly distracted. But if I’m occupied with something that requires a lot of attention, the videos go down as a charm.
It’s the curse of a busy, hyperactive brain. At least, two channels at once need to be occupied or I can’t process anything.
Maybe you’ll be the next Grandma Moses.

Wanted to share this great poem. Like Simonov’s translation even more than the original. Putin did rob, so грабить не посмел doesn’t suit, but a few other things do:
A Dead Statesman – Kipling
I could not dig; I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
Mine angry and defrauded young?

Me too, but in my case it’s not due to a busy, hyperactive brain. 🙂
Solving math works for me instead of painting.
When you say “I’ve taken up painting,” do you mean you started going to кружок / a hobby group for painting? Simply view YouTube videos to learn the most basic, foundational technics? I know there are books teaching how to draw / paint too.
What kind of paintings do you try to create? I imagine you enjoying the creation of abstract paintings to express your feeling and ideas, not depicting reality in a realist tradition.
When we had a painting class in high school as an enrichment, one of the brightest students created abstract paintings. I was stuck at pathetically failing to recreate a picture from a Bazooka Joe (a small comics on a chewing gum wrapper). 🙂 Here is an example:

I lock myself in my office and toil at it alone. It’s actually really calming. And yes, I’m trying to do a realist landscape. I’ll post it when I’m done, although given my level of talent, it probably won’t resemble any particular landscape.

Try acrylic flow, it is a lot of fun and you don’t need to be an artist. there are great YouTube videos.
