Really Into It

N’s mother is a very educated woman, a lover of classical poetry, extremely well-traveled. She could be living in the US right now where both her children are. She chose not to. She chose to march in a military uniform at the age of 73, singing war propaganda.

This is a cultured woman of means, so that it’s completely clear. She’s not an illiterate babushka brainwashed by the propaganda she’s impotent to resist.

People choose this, is what I’m saying. They aren’t forced, duped, backed into a corner. They are simply into it.

  1. I feel a lot of people like her have been overwhelmed with the rapid pace of change and are trying to derive meaning and self-worth in “traditional” practices and ideology. Some of these practices and ideologies are just not healthy, such as nationalistic patriotism.

Same thing has happened here with many boomers buying into Q Anon conspiracies and such. You have perfectly rational people who used to be very educated falling into that rabbit hole. Many people just need to have a sense of something being in control, because the alternative is a world where nobody really is and the future is highly uncertain and chaotic.

    1. The QAnon folks are now all on Telegram. Telegram banned me for doing Ukrainian translations about the psychological rehabilitation of children during wartime. But the craziest QAnon freaks are never banned. I wonder why this is.

          1. Exactly. I never posted anything. Not a single post. All I did was translation work for a Ukrainian group that does beneficent work for children. I appealed and appealed, and got no response.
