An Issue of Class

Not a single e-reader, let alone a paper book at this resort. Instead, I saw a baby in a stroller staring at a phone screen.

    1. “I read quite a lot… at home. But never in a place”

There’s a general idea in Poland that reading is a cold weather activity and the idea of ‘beach read’ is kind of a non-starter… so packing books on vacation isn’t really a thing here which means there aren’t so many interesting Polish books to be picked up at the hotel reading shelf….

      1. Ah, well. I never understood reading on the beach, either… probably because I grew up next to a beach with wonderful crashing waves and an undertow that claims a few hapless swimmers every year. One does. not. ever. leave children unsupervised near water. Not even for a second. Just in my local, friend-of-a-friend level of acquaintance, there’ve been five drownings in my lifetime– plus two little kids who survived being fished out of water not-breathing after ??? minutes. That’s without even getting into dumb tourist antics. There’s a certain informed paranoia that comes with that kind of exposure.

  1. At DMV today I observed a one year old with young mother. Didn’t hear her say more than one word to him. He was looking at some program or video of animals, maybe horses, on her phone. She seemed utterly exhausted, or maybe demoralized, and alone. I felt sad for them

    1. This kid will be medicated by the age of 3 and become a lifelong psychiatric patient. In the meantime, the inventors of these devices and the practitioners of psychiatry don’t let their children near these devices. The future competition is being eliminated in infancy.
