Cincinnati Plans

Turns out I have to go to Cincinnati in November. Is there anything one definitely needs to do or see there? Anything that it’s famous for?

  1. Definitely go to the zoo! One of the best in the nation! If you come late enough in November, you may even be able to catch the Festival of Lights. The art museum is worth checking out. If a small child is accompanying you, you must visit the natural history museum.

We also have a variety of local foods (Skyline “chili,” goetta, etc.) but ime visitors to the city tend not to like them. What you really need to try is our Indian food. I recommend Ambar, Amma’s Kitchen, or Brij Mohan, depending what part of town you find yourself in.

If you like the idea of a GIANT store with food from all over the world, go to Jungle Jim’s. This is another one that is fun for kids, but I highly recommend it even if you’re going alone. You may also enjoy Findlay Market. We have a bookstore with 5 floors called the Ohio Book Store. I haven’t actually been there, just putting it out there.

  2. Sadly, you will be missing Oktoberfest, we have the biggest one in America (and briefly, when Europe was locked down, the biggest one in the world.) Wiener dog race pictured below. If you care to experience German culture here, you could go to the German language mass at the beautiful Old St. Mary’s. Or eat the the local “food” known as goetta, which is German peasant food that nobody in Germany even eats.

  3. The obligatory local cuisine e to try is Cincinnati chili, which bears no resemblance to the tex-mex dish, but rather is a sauce on spaghetti invented years ago by an immigrant Greek restaurateur. There are two diner chains devoted to this dish: Skyline Chili and Goldstar Chili.

    1. “Cincinnati chili, …. is a sauce on spaghetti”

I’d heard of it before but not that it’s not related to chilli… Is it any good? I’m a pasta fiend and always looking for new options… maybe I’ll try to look up a recipe.

      1. Skyline Chili comes in tins and you can probably get some sent to you, although if there’s any kind of ban on importing meat from the US, you can likely forget about that notion.

It’s like a Texas meat-only chili but with some Greek spices to complement the chili spice blend base.

The tins are silly expensive in the US already compared to the cost of more mainstream chili with or without beans, especially given their small size, so expect some sticker shock for shipping costs layered on.

Although the tins show the contents being used on pasta, I’ve also had Skyline Chili on hot dogs in other parts of the country, such as at the hot dog place near the Italian grocery at Pike Place Market in Seattle.

So perhaps pick up two tins and give that a try.

Over the past two years or so, most of the US makers of chili in tins have switched to a beef/pork combination, which may not be bad for you but is awful for anyone who can’t eat pork.

I don’t know if that’s happened to Skyline Chili, but it’s definitely a problem with Hormel and the others like it, and I hadn’t noticed until a friend brought it up shortly after not being able to buy pork-free chili at Walmart except for some vegetarian options.

As for Cincinnati, I have no strong memories of it one way or another, except that I recall getting there is generally not an accident or something that happens on a lark.

So Clarissa may as well try everything because it’s entirely possible odds won’t have her going back.

Also, I just managed to discover what the administrator password is on my laptop a few minutes ago and I’ve also managed to unlock the outer encrypted container for my account keys, so orphaned branches of information seem to be getting glued to the roots in weird ways so that I can remember them again.

That’s progress, so maybe I’ll manage yet to remember how to unlock some of the password safes inside.

Be thankful for auto-pay and password resets when they’re an option. 🙂
