Book Notes: Elizabeth von Arnim’s Enchanted April

Enchanted April seems to be von Arnim’s best-known novel. There’s even a movie based on it. To me, it’s her weakest book of all I read, including the one where she lists all the dogs she ever had.

Enchanted April is cute. It goes on being unwaveringly cute from the first page to the last. So much unrelieved cuteness gets depressing after a while but the novel is mercifully short. There were moments when I rolled my eyes so hard they almost hurt. I mean, it’s not a bad novel. I wish I had it with me when I was sick with COVID and had brain fog and no energy. It’s a perfect COVID book, not least because the possibility of death seems a lot less daunting if it can liberate one from so much cuteness.

  1. Hi Clarissa, this is months late but I have to say I am reading Enchanted April and loving it! I can’t wait to find out what happens (though I expect the answer will be…nothing much). I love the over the top language and excessive cuteness. I love the contrast between the two terrible husbands in the beginning. I wouldn’t have known about Elizabeth von Armin if it wasn’t for you so thank you for the recommendation.

I read Vera over the summer, thanks to your recommendation. It was good, but short and unsatisfying. I’m enjoying Enchanted April much more.

    1. I’m glad you are enjoying it! I’m not into sweet entertaining stuff myself but it’s definitely a great novel for people who like humorous writing.
