Cover Art Suggestions

What do you, friends, think that the cover of my book Contemporary Spanish Literature for Ukrainians should look like? I have zero ideas.

Pictures of the Indignados? Nice counterpoint of an unsuccessful protest movement….

Or a collage of notable events

I love this picture of the 1981 coup attempt

or this picture from the Duchess of Alba’s wedding (might frighten readers and horses….)

      1. “scary old lady”

Not just any scary old lady, she had more royal blood than Elizabeth…. The extent to which she dominated the Spanish popular press when she was alive was very odd… but I miss her now that she’s gone…

  2. I have a process or strategy suggestion instead: let potential cover artists read your book first.

If they feel enthusiastic about it and that’s not bullshit just to get a paying gig, have them send you a rough sketch of an idea.

Then if it looks on programme, give them a serious commission.

Essentially it’s like a design charette in New Urbanist architecture, but it’s only so you can choose the artist with full engagement.

Some genres stink at art for covers (sup sci-fi?), and so perhaps encouraging higher standards and engagement will help in yours.

  3. BTW I will be away (as in far away) getting surgery done (and the subsequent recovery) over the next few weeks.

Had enough fun with this last arrogant doctor who ignored my known drug interactions.

So I’m on a plane for purposes referred to as “medical tourism” by Americans, which I refer to as “going somewhere less likely to get me killed by someone’s professional ignorance”.

My fantastic “platinum tier” Obozocare medical cover won’t pay for this anyway.

    1. Get well soon, Alley Crackpot. I really enjoy your [generally erudite, sickly humorous, somewhat obscure] posts: this blog is not the same without you.
