Some serious German-speaking authors that I like to read and are widely reviewed:
Daniel Kehlmann (very successful commercially), Judith Hermann, Clemens Setz, Juli Zeh (very successful commercially, often causes controversy)
Other serious authors whose books (I have the impression) are widely discussed and reviewed: Bodo Kirchhoff, Jenny Erpenbeck, Terezia Mora, Christian Kracht, Nino Haratschiwili, Maxim Biller…
