What is this obsession with human body in US politics… so many issues to focus on and resolve in geopolitical, technological and economic contexts.
I don’t get it… it’s not even a. East vs west thing as other European powers don’t seem as obsessed with these creepy non-issues as the US..

It’s a religious pursuit. Y’all don’t suffer from the Puritan founder effect in Europe, AFAIK. The particular American brand of progressivism is descended from some of the weirder branches of protestantism, which adopted that wacky side of Gnosticism which held that we are pure souls trapped in disgusting, contaminated material bodies…. this comes out in weird ways, particularly when you hang onto that assumption while ditching the idea of God, repentance, and self-abnegation. What you end up with is these freaky, poorly-defined notions that the body must be punished, that the body and what we do with it doesn’t matter, that the body is a cage that we have to transcend in order to become our true selves.
So you have that whole materiality-is-gross thing, and then on top of that, the progressive idea that accepting limits of any kind is some kind of defeat (keeping in mind that most American culture, left right and other, is progressive– i.e. it holds as a central tenet that the economy, scientific discovery, technology, sexual freedom, etc must keep changing, developing, advancing, forever. Stagnation or regression on anything is not possible according to the Religion of Progress, despite historical evidence to the contrary), and that gives you *all* the weirdness: having children is an icky animal habit. If you don’t like your weight, your nose, your genitals, or any part of your flesh… well, you should get surgery to change it, take pills to adjust it, punch holes in it to punish it. You should disfigure it to show how little you care about it. We should figure out how to upload our brains to the cloud and escape physical existence entirely: it’s the resurrection and heaven for people who don’t believe in God.
