Don’t Scavenge

At my university, it is now forbidden to say “scavenger hunt.” Nobody has any idea why. We are being extorted in hushed voices to avoid saying it at all costs.

On the positive side, nobody has the budget anymore to organize any activities of the scavenger hunt variety. So the opportunity to transgress by accident is not there.

Sex Symbols of the Left

God, these poor people. What’s happening to them? Why are they in such a state?

I’m beginning to worry they are about to go very mental.

Jewish Help Needed

People who practice Judaism, please help. On Shabbos, when do you light the candles? Do you do it before leaving for the synagogue? Or after you come back?

This is for my translation, and I hope I’m in time before Shabbos starts and it’s too late for you to answer.

Translation Update

By the way, I already finished Act I of four. I’m annotating, too, so it’s a serious, big project. Of course, with a literary translation, I’ll edit a lot before I reach the final version. But it’s going well.

It’s going to be around 18,000 words when I’m done.

This is all happening while I’m writing my book, teaching 4 (as in four) courses, chairing the department, and reading 5 books in 4 languages.

Let nobody say I’m not productive.

Whose Government?

It’s curious that she stopped the phrase about “my government” right after the word “failure.” There is no way to explain what it is that our government actually failed to do here. Afghanistan is a sovereign nation with its own government. Should our government have more weight in Afghanistan than its own? Then why shouldn’t Afghanistan’s government have weight in America?

The utter incapacity of so many people to understand the concept of sovereignty and nation-state is disturbing.

The Anglo Prestige

A judge in Australia ruled that sex is changeable

Have you noticed how it’s always English-speaking countries? Everybody else then apes them because the Anglo prestige is unbeatable but the source is always Anglo.

I love the English-speaking world with an uncommon passion, which is why it hurts to see that it’s begun to eat itself.

“The world is unknowable. Everything is subjective. There’s no objective reality we can observe and name.” These ideas are wrong. They are an illusion. We need to let them go. Reality exists. Beauty exists. Truth exists. And they all can be known and named by human beings. There’s no individual truth. No individual standard of beauty. We can learn what the truth is but we can’t make our own. We can observe the laws of nature but we can’t create our own. Not everything is changeable. Freedom is not absolute but highly circumscribed by the limitations of our physicality.

Please, dear Anglos, let’s move away from the erroneous belief that everything is relative and, hence, changeable. It’s not. You are talking yourself (and everybody else as well because of the Anglo prestige) into a very bad place.

ISIS in Volgograd

I’ve seen a lot of conformations, so there’s definitely something to the news about a group of ISIS fighters overtaking a jail in Volgograd, Russia:

P.S.  The authorities are urgently flying a mullah to the jail to help calm down the ISIS dudes. Thanks to Russia’s enormous distances and the notorious Russian problems with transportation, the mullah will take at least 1,5 hours to get to the jail. The ISIS fighters can do a lot of damage before then.

Book Recommendation Thanks

Whoever recommended Miranda July’s All Fours, good person, you. I’m very grateful.

Full review to follow when I’m finished but I’m very glad I listened to your advice and got into this book.

Wanted to express my gratitude as soon as possible. Keep the recommendations coming since you clearly know what kind of stuff I might like. I didn’t expect to like this novel and was very skeptical but it’s definitely worth it.

Tim Walz’s Son

One thing that got to me from the snippets of the DNC that I saw was the reaction of Tim Walz’s son. I felt exactly this way about my Dad. Still do, in fact. It’s been over two years since he died but it’s still raw.

Tim Walz’s son is a special needs boy, so he expresses himself more openly than I ever could but the feeling is the same. How wonderful for this boy to have such a relationship with his Dad. What a gift a great father is.

Any child is eager to feel like this about the parents if they give the tiniest chance.

Paraphilias and Consent

I was just in the elevator with a very tall, burly dude (I’d say, at least 6″5) dressed in a mini dress and with a huge, spiky BDSM collar. I was alone with him in a small elevator. He wasn’t trans anything. He was a man who wasn’t remotely trying to pass as anything other than a man.

There’s no reason for this man to be dressed like that at 2 pm in a work setting other than to force strangers to participate in his paraphilia. I have not consented to participate, yet I had to because he can force me and I can’t object.
