Worth a Fig

These were grown outdoors in Kharkiv, which has the same climate as Montreal, Canada. It took 15 years to adapt these figs to Ukrainian climate.

I love figs with an uncommon passion but they’re expensive around here.

  1. you can grow them in Illinois…we grow them here in CT. Just have to cover them or bring them in for the winter. Growing up, my grandparents had several fig trees and September was a favorite month for that reason. Nonna would send me home with Ziploc bags full of figs.

after she passed moved in with my parents, my parents didn’t care to save her trees, but I took part of one and it just started this year to give a decent amount of fruit. So…twelve years 😅 But it’s worth the wait for the memories alone. She passed almost three years ago.

      1. You might be able to grow the Chicago variety but you may need to protect the roots with a heavy mulch. I grow four varieties, the Italian Honey is the tastiest, but only the Desert King is a reliable producer… and only if the female raccoon doesn’t bring her kits to raid the fruit ;-D
