1. Personal drama is definitely one of the worst things about working with Americans. I am a generally patient and understanding person, but at this point, I am beyond caring. Just get your act together and get stuff done. Bad things in life happen to everyone. People die, people get sick, emergencies come. Through all of that, we have to find a way to move forward. Yes, by all means take a day or a week off when you need it (I am not a complete ogre), but this cannot go on for years on end. I have foreign students whose families lost houses in bombing and are displaced due to a war who do not bring as much drama to the workplace.

   1. People who’ve been through real drama don’t have to generate it. The workplace is often a great way to escape it.

   Deskilling of the NAmerican workforce…. when I worked in an office people had skills. That doesn’t mean there wasn’t drama – most of it kind of silly but it wasn’t the leitmotiff of the workplace. Once workers are deskilled and demoralized by a constant drumbeat of how unncecessary and inferior they are… then all they have left is drama because that’s all that gives them a work identity.

   Doesn’t matter if it’s secretaries or tech bros the dynamic is the same – educate your own or import others and/or go remote. Make your choice and go on about your business rather than rationalize it away with stories of inadequate citizens.
