WP assures me they haven’t made any wholesale changes recently but I logged out and couldn’t leave more than a one-letter comment on my own blog. It’s ludicrous.

The comment interface looks the same as it used to on my phone…. but on a computer it’s still farked…. formerly once you type a letter a little strip came up with a link to sign in and now…. it doesn’t.

It only lets one-letter comments come through. So annoying. Stupid WP.

It let’s you type out a full message if you’re replying to a message, like yours above.
Oh, but I can’t put in my email and name. Still borked!

Is that what’s going on? I’ve had a couple of people leave one-letter comments lately, and I couldn’t figure out why.

That’s what WP does to comments from people who haven’t signed in. Please badger them on Twitter. If enough of us don’t, they’ll pull the changes that caused this.

Thank you for explaining that. It had me baffled.

I wanted to leave a comment for the Q&A Physiology post yesterday but it was impossible, on either my phone or a computer. I now see that it lets me reply to another comment but not write an original comment.
I hope this gets fixed soon.
Also, where are the Anonymouses? They haven’t been around for some time…

So apparently I have to enter my email before typing anything in the comment field. Odd, but okay.

So weird, I can write full replies to an existing message. But not create a new message.

That is interesting, the same is true for me. I am completely unable to leave a comment, but can reply. Thanks for figuring that one out!

Also, I am not able to leave a name/email (so can only comment as anaonymous since I do not have a wordpress or facebook) and if I want to comment again, I need to leave the website and come back. Looks to me like some sort of a software deterioration. Strange.

Clarissa, your worpress website also stopped showing the summary of the last comments made on the side tab and the button to submit anonymous questions is also gone. Was that one of the changes you made or is that independent of your attempt to solve the commenting problem?

My anonymous question button is gone! Unbelievable rubbish. I’m on it.

OK, that’s good to know. In that case, I’ll leave a comment on every new post and people can respond to that.

One thing I’ve seen in a place or two is that it might be related to the theme you’re using… I notice that all the other things (like search and recent comments etc) are also missing from your front page.
Maybe changing the theme would help?

I restored the Anonymous questions button and the search, even twice. I’ll have to keep working on it.

You must have jinxed it when you wrote recently that the comments and exchanges with your readers were what made this blog all worthwhile. Some maleficent gremlin probably decided that it would be great fun to play havoc with you and your readers, just in case we were feeling too complacent with ourselves. Good grief, is that what some people take for a hobby nowadays?

It does seem as if the whole theme changed. The Avatars are also different.

I took the theme down and then put it back up but now I’ll have to re-tune. The avatars I changed on purpose, hoping that would do the trick.

I am still able to comment but:
It is still giving me the “whoa! You just posted that!” message even though I only hit ‘comment’ once.
And, the starting gray text in the box, “Type / to choose a block” no longer disappears when I start typing. First line contains that, plus my text, overlapping. Annoying but not fatal.

I had that problem too, but now the overlapping text has disappeared. Progress!

Under this new system, you can’t format replies. So you can’t use quotation marks, or embed tweets or images, use bold/italic font etc. Nothing. The top panel in the reply box used to have all the formatting options, and pressing “/” used to open up more options (paragraph, tweet, image, quotation) but it’s all gone.

Also, in the previous version you had a side panel which showed all the latest comments that had been posted under various topics. It was a handy way to see where the latest conversation was happening without having to check each individual topic and scroll down to check if someone posted a reply. It’s gone now.

The latest comments went to the bottom of the page. I’ll restore everything when I get to a desktop tomorrow. It’s been torture doing it on my phone.

Oh, no hurry. Sorry, if it came out like I was complaining. Just wanted to give feedback on my user experience.

I second all of Stringer Bell’s comments. Also, it doesn’t allow me to write my name and email address, but I’m not Anonymous, it’s Avi.

Thank you! I really appreciate it. Let’s hope the commenting drama resolves itself. This incessant fussing with technology to justify salaries is very annoying.
