A Slur Joke

Every time a katsap does something evil, Ukrainians get the blame.

For those who don’t know, Simonyan is one of the most famous propagandists in Russia. And “katsap” is an ethnic slur for a Russian. We’ve been laughing over this joke for three days, it’s really funny.

  1. ““katsap” is an ethnic slur for a Russian”

The word is used in Polish but has heavy soviet connotations… either the original or those wanting to rebuild it. The usual slur against russians is ruski/ruska – plural ruscy or especially rude ruskie. The rossijane/russke distinction doesn’t exist in Polish, rosjanin/rosjanka/rosjanie (adj rosyjski) are polite and ruski etc are rude.

One source I looked at said the etymology of ‘kacap’ isn’t known but it might well be a borrowing from Yiddish from Lviv where a similar word means ‘idiot’….

  2. I’m not really convinced that Russia has significant global influence. In SA, people only know Putin and maybe Abramovich because he owned Chelsea.

Compare this to the US, where I recently heard a local rapper say he felt like he was from Compton and Afrikaners are more likely to listen to country music than anything Dutch.

    1. Yes, Russia is a failed culture that only evokes interest as some sort of an utterly imaginary “anti-America.” People never really talk about Russia. Russia is a stand-in for “I despise the US.”
