Because Ukraine is a sovereign nation, you stupid bastard. And Israel’s whole position is that Palestine is not a separate country. You claim that Palestine is part of your own country. Your relationship with parts of your own country is, by definition, different than a relationship between two separate warring nations. If Palestine is, indeed, a separate country, then recognize it already and leave us all be.

Israel does not claim Gaza as its territory. If it did, by Israeli law, it would have to offer citizenship to everyone in Gaza. By contrast, Israel does claim the Golan Heights and many of the Druze living there have taken Israeli citizenship. Russia most certainly lays claim to at least parts of Ukrainian territory and should therefore be responsible for feeding anyone in that territory. Obviously Russia does not care about human rights at all as opposed to Israel which makes at least a flawed attempt to balance respecting human rights with trying to avoid signing a suicide pact.

If Gaza is a sovereign nation, it should be recognized as such. If it’s not a sovereign nation, it shouldn’t be compared to one.
Russia has controlled Donetsk since 2014. I have relatives living there. They aren’t starving or getting bombed. This doesn’t justify invading a sovereign nation but the situation is wrong only because such an invasion did take place.

There can be a state in Gaza as soon as there is a government is in place that is not committed to carrying out October 7 style attacks on Israel. This is much like Nazi Germany, where the issue was not whether Germany should be a sovereign state, even though it lost that for a few years, but Hitler’s government. It is important to keep in mind that causing mass starvation in Germany was an essential component of Allied strategy in both World Wars.

India’s ties with Russia and the USSR earlier go way back. The USSR was pretty much the only major power that had India’s back when it actually mattered (1971 war that led to the creation of bangladesh, prompted by pakistan’s genocide of millions of bengalis). Meanwhile, the US was busy arming pakistan to the teeth because of its cold war priorities. As the author of this blog would remind you, being an american ally and believing its promises can be very very costly (if you’re not Israel).

That 1971 example was to illustrate the history of the relationship, which continues to this day, in a very material fashion (energy, defense, etc.). Nation-states operate on their own strategic calculus, which is different from individual moral frameworks. Expecting them to behave like people is non-sensical.
How does an energy-insecure third world country deal with its energy problem? How does it deal with the massive military aid from the US to its neighbor, a genocidal dictatorship?
While US literally gave its blessing to a coup in bangladesh last year, installing radical islamists, who are now talking about opening a 3rd front against India. As if Pakistan and China weren’t enough.

Actually, it’s the policy of the Indian government and has widespread support by the citizenry. I’ve seen to many videos of russian atrocities supported by Indians (some are bots surely but many/most aren’t).
It’s one thing for a government to grit its teeth and do what you it thinks it has to for the good of the country…. what Modi has done goes far beyond that.
russia now wants to import one million Indians to replace the russian citizens that have been killed in Ukraine (or badly wounded since russian society has no place for the disabled).

Don’t take it personally. In Slavic languages it’s normal to refer to governments and government representatives as plural nouns referring to nationality. Clarissa does this frequently (russian and Ukrainian influence) and I do too sometimes (influence from Polish). So “Indians” in this case refers to Indian government policies which do in fact help fund russia’s war against Ukrainian civilians.

The EU has been trying to get away from trade with russia (hampered by US and Canadian refusals to export enough energy to them). the EU had stupidly believed that integrating russia into western economies would make it peaceful and it’s not easy to turn around on that.
Meanwhile India is doubling down and increasing trade with russia helping it produce weapons to kill civilians with and in some cases Indians are serving in the russian army and russia wants to bring in as many as 1,000,000 Indians to use as canon fodder or to ramp up weapons production before it attacks Europe again.
There’s no way to put lipstick on the pig of Indian support for russia.

I live next door to Ukraine in a country that russia would also like to invade (not immediately but in a few years according to official russian state media). So it’s important to me.
Lots of readers on the blog are in Europe and if russia succeeds then hundreds of millions of people’s lives will be disrupted and impoverished and/or killed.
russia and china together want to destroy the world order that saw unprecedented prosperity…. they’re actively working toward the world described in 1984 (aka multipolarity) bloods and crips on a worldwide level with Africa just being a resource pit for them.
If you haven’t bothered to learn any of this, then go and do your research.

But China doesn’t act much, it responds. russia acts first and responds second which makes it much more dangerous.

I understand that many people read selectively, and it’s perfectly fine. Some are bored with the endless book reviews, while others come solely for the reviews. Some are bored by my political commentary while others like it. To me, the blog is a sort of a diary where I don’t censor myself. I simply say whatever occurs to me at any given moment and I’m very grateful when people respond and want to discuss. I e received extraordinary insights from these interactions. But why it’s necessary to inform me that one doesn’t care about things that matter to me I will never understand. Just scroll through to whatever seems of interest.
Thank you for explaining the importance of this particular subject. I don’t believe I write excessively about Ukraine but if I do, again, people can just keep scrolling.
