Feeling Understood

This really spoke to me:

This is totally me and N. People online are calling this Eastern European slop and yes, guilty as charged.

  1. this seems really sweet to me. The woman got to understand the pressure her husband feels. Why is that slop? What does it have to do with Eastern Europe?

The people and the room are very Eastern Europe coded…. (I’ve been in that room a bunch of times).

Also the word ‘mortgage’ appears in cyrillic (not sure which language, russian or bulgarian I think).

Stereotypes of bubbly flouncy femininity and morose doom-maxed masculinity are very on point.

IME women in the region can be just as doom-fixated as the men and use the flouncy feminine stuff as coping mechanism, part of the point is a lot (I mean… a _lot_) of men don’t have much in the way of coping resources (one reason that alcohol abuse is so widespread).

I’ll add that there’s a bit of a generational change… younger guys now do have things like video games and music (esp and death metal or techno type stuff) not available in N’s generation. That has it’s own problems, a few years ago I had a really smart student who ended up crashing out of the program because he was spending something like 8 hours a day on an arena multiplayer video game. He said he was in the top 2 percent players in the world.. I asked if that was enough to go pro and he said it wasn’t even close…
