When I taught a university course in technical communication (i.e. writing for science, engineering, and business) I gave my students certain advice based on my decades of working in private industry. One such piece of advice was this: “Always be nice to the secretaries. They have lots of responsibilities but almost zero power. Treat them well. Like the Aesop fable where little mouse who helped the captured lion that had spared the mouse’s life, a secretary whom you treated well can help you out when you need it most.”
