On the subject of Orban in Hungary, he absolutely stinks and is disgusting. But the ways in which the liberal opposition in the EU tries to remove him also stink and are disgusting. This is the clearest situation of both options being worse. When you are choosing between the Russian hatred of everything good and the leftist hatred of everything good, that’s a sad situation.
God help Hungary.

What are these? I’ve been following the campaigns…. what has the EU done to remove him?
Orban and allies scream a lot about it but when you ask for details they start talking about the UK or Romania or other, unrelated, issues and when all else fails they start talking about how Zelenskyy wants to steal EU money from Hungary…
Magyar’s campaign has been about issues like quality of life and relations with allies and Orban’s has mostly been screaming Zelenskyy bad! EU bad! Ukraine bad! russia friend!
Some sources say Vance’s and Trump’s endorsement hurt Orban… which is funny if true.

In material terms, Pedro Sanchez us offering a lot more real assistance to Russia than Orban. And where is the campaign of outrage against that? Who is even mentioning him in this context?

I see Orban conceded. Of course, none of the people who filled my timeline for weeks, predicting how he would refuse to accept the results and declare martial law will apologize.
I deeply despise Orban. But the future of infinity Arabs and extreme censorship that awaits Hungary is not great either.
It’s very sad that these are the only choices.

Poland has neither of those things and without oligarchs and simping for putin, so that’s possible, hopefully Magyar will look to Warsaw and not Berlin….
I’m glad Orban has conceded and respect him at least for that and I’ll admit at one time he was what the country needed but that time ended years ago.
Meanwhile his snivelling FM Szijjartó has disappeared and the Polish politicians who were given ‘asylum’ are expected to flee. One was already spotted in the Budapest airport…..

Oh, he’s a total bastard too…. I despise that ratfucker…. on the other hand, Spain does not border the former Soviet Union and rusia/ussr never put down a citizen uprising in Spain so a kind of ignorance is understandable, not forgiveable but understandable…
But Orban began as an anti-soviet firebrand only to become a russian shill… de-emphasize the importance of the 1956 Uprising and worse which is a disgusting character arc…
And it seems that Tisza (Magyar’s party) has won a very large victory, so that’s good. I’m not expecting miracles from him or immediate change but I’m cautiously optimistic that he won’t be as purely awful as Orban. With a bit of luck he might be able to attract some of the educated young adults who’ve been running from Orban’s Hungary for a number of years now.

You’re spot on Cliff. Just came to say the same thing. Trump is doing serious damage to the worldwide right wing nationalistic brand by showing how unhinged and chaotic it can me. Ultimately people want stability, and there is nothing concrete that the right wing is offering.

Let’s see if the new dude in Hungary lets in five trillion Africans. I have no idea if he will or won’t. But I’ll be shocked (pleasantly, of course) if he somehow manages not to.

He’s already said his first international visit will be to Poland. This is partly to mend fences broken by Orban and he and PM Tusk are expected to coordinate on migration policy (Poland does not accept non-European asylum seekers who cross the Belarusian border).

I’m painfully hoping to be completely wrong. But you see what’s happening in Spain. And Spain could have a million of Argentinean Pedros today. Yet it’s not choosing the culturally similar Pedros.

I keep forgetting that almost no one outside Hungary knows this stuff since Orban was funding and/or facilitating a bunch of western/American “conservatives” who most likely did not speak the language or understand the culture and willingly spread his propaganda…
