Resentful Mothers

They should learn German and listen to Thomas Bernhard in the original. I’ve done an hour of listening, and I’m attending the Faculty Senate in a state of luminous bliss. I don’t even know what people are ranting about because I’m sitting in an armchair in a Viennese salon in the 1980s.

People should occupy their minds, is what I’m saying. It doesn’t have to be German. Any fresh intellectual endeavor works great.

  1. Eh. There aren’t a lot of options for moms other than: go back to work and just be a part-time parent on evenings and weekends (leaves a lot to be desired), or give up the FT job to be a FT parent… and get used to being isolated and kind of disrespected (until you find a compatible social group) for “not working”.

Well, even during the era before feminism was prevalent, many working class found part time work as their older children could take over part of the tasks at home. But at least mothers of that era were certainly not disrespected, quite the opposite.

  2. There are many more reasons than this that we homeschool, but it is an excellent excuse for my continuing education. I read for my own personal pleasure quite infrequently but spending my life reading, analyzing, and commenting on a wide range of subjects with the kids guarantees that I will never be bored. I have at least twelve more years to go and I hope to be spending my spare time as a grandmother by then.

My son announced that he wants his modern language to be German (they all study Latin) and I’m excited for the refresh alongside him.
