I was today years old when I discovered that in 1944 the Franco regime issued a decree that made it mandatory for university departments of Romance Philology to teach a course on Catalan philology and literature for at least 3 hours a week.
Euskera, the Basque language, was promoted even more dramatically by the dictatorship.

Fascinating. Why was that? How was it taught? This is what interests me the most.
I knew that the Franco regime in its later year tolerated regional languages as representation of regional cultures as long as they did not represent the Spanish nation. An example of that is la nova canço, allowed, but not in Catalan at Eurovision (JM Serrat).
