Evan Barker, the author of the book Nothing Left, became a Democrat for the most respectable reason. She (yes, she is a woman in spite of the name) was born with a genetic condition that means she needs quite a lot of medical services to remain healthy. Based on the story she tells in the book, I can conclude that she is not a moocher. This is a person who wanted to work, who took all sorts of jobs without considering herself to be too important for them. I’ve seen no evidence in the text that she wanted any handouts. All she wanted was to buy medical insurance in spite of having a pre-existing condition. She got that opportunity through Obamacare, at least for a while, and was immensely grateful to the Democrats who provided it.

I will never be a Democrat again, but I don’t see what Republicans are offering such people. Not that Democrats are offering anything at this point either. But it’s their funeral. I don’t care about them. I would really like Republicans to concentrate on helping Americans like Evan Barker. There are many people—not me, I’m fine—but other people who are honest, hardworking, and need just a bit of a leg up in order to achieve their goals.

Evan Barker stopped being a Democrat because Democrats abandoned any pretense of caring about anything other than race. There are many voters like that ripe for the taking, but they need to see themselves reflected in our party instead of being sloganeered at about the importance of free markets.

I agree, but the Insurance and Medical lobbies have deep, deep pockets.

Well, Kid, be careful. Both my wife and myself carried the little green card of the CCF, until after merging with the Canadian Labour Council, they supported AA — because as the pampered upper caste higly educated Carribean woman supporter loudly shouted during convention: “That without Affirmative Action, we cannot fix anything.” Of course, that doesn’t change your core beliefs, you simply become aware that some travelling alongside truly do not mean you well.

My politics were family based, the women generally “social gospel” rooted, the men generally trade unionism based. My grandfather and grandmother eventually owned a construction company where nobody joined a union, because all of his workers, whether tradesman or labourer, were paid above union rate ;-D

I was a Democrat for a long time because of stuff like this. I’m a Republican now mostly because of immigration, but I’m not under the impression either party is “for” working people. A few years ago, right wingers were (accurately) pointing out that college debt forgiveness is a giveaway from those who didn’t go to college to those who did. I thought, great, but what does the right have to offer working people? Not much.

Trump has changed the party for the better but it’s like pulling teeth getting the right to give up on the economic libertarianism.

That’s exactly how I feel. Of course, Trump is a million times better than anything that the Democrats have on offer, but it would be nice to find out what it is that we are for and what concerns the economy. We’re against socialism, and that’s the right thing to be, but what are we for?
