Normal Behavior

At the hospital, my mother behaves very normally and exactly like her regular self. The doctors are so confused by her normal state that they sent her in for a CAT scan of the brain to see if she has a brain tumor.

They could have saved a bunch of money if they’d asked me. I would have informed them that she’s been exactly like this for as long as I’ve known her.

People drive me nuts with endless repetitions of, “it’s because she’s sick she’s behaving like this. Illness changes you.” Yeah, ok, whatever, geniuses. It didn’t change her. Welcome to my world.

We never knew what to do about my grandma’s driver’s license; her skills hadn’t declined with age, she was just *always* that bad of a driver.

My dad is 80, and we are… very much in the same bind.

At least I managed to convince her to see Klara for 15 minutes. What is that with my child’s grandmothers, both of whom refuse to see her?

My grandparents and my great-grandparents were so important in my life, and I haven’t been able to give this to my child.

I respected my crazy aunt, for all that she could drive everyone around her batty, for recognizing at one point that she shouldn’t drive any more (some time before her license expired and with no incidents that I knew of).

That constrained her in a lot of ways, especially since senior mobility services were not abundant and no family lived very close to her (all died or moved) and she didn’t much to the people around her. I made a point of staying in the area four or five times a year for 4-5 days or so and visited every day for a few hours.
