From the Farmer’s Market

This is what we brought home from our local Farmer’s Market. I love Farmers’ Markets passionately. For some reason, though, this year our Farmer’s Market offers a lot less foodstuffs and a lot more uneatable things: aprons, pots and pans, ornaments, etc.

I still miss the amazing Farmer’s Market on the corner of Sherbrooke and Parc La Fontaine in Montreal. I was completely broke but even $20 would be enough to buy a lot of fresh produce and berries. Food-wise, I haven’t yet found a place in the US that would be able to beat Montreal. When I lived in Montreal, I ate more and weighed significantly less than I do in the US.

  1. Thanks for reminding me that I agreed to meet my friends by the Farmer’s Market today! We’re going to buy raspberries and make a cake with a compote from the berries.

  2. While I’ve never been to the farmer’s market in Montreal, the farmer’s market in Olympia, Wa. is by far the best I’ve ever been to.

It had more variety, more personality and more choice than anywhere I’ve ever seen — it covered about two acres, had seven different on-site restaurants, approximately 100 booths, five different bakeries and 14 different nurseries. If there is a bigger one, I’ve never seen it.

I really miss that Olympia farmer’s market.

    1. Any place that has a mushroom farm and a berry farm is a place I need to visit. The market looks lovely. If I lived near a place like this, I’d never enter a supermarket ever again.

  3. Farmers’ markets are great. I recall often going with my mom to an Amish farmers’ market in Philadelphia back during WWII. There was another Amish market in Annapolis when my wife and I lived there about a decade ago. All sorts of fresh goodies, including baked goods and candy, were available at very reasonable prices. They were as good as if not better than home-made.

Farmers’ markets are good here in Panama as well and there are several. However, it’s even better to buy stuff from the local farmers directly. Last week, we bought eight beautiful, big red bell peppers from a farmer a kilometer from our finca for $1.00. He was happy and so were we. They not only looked great, they were. I’ve also grown them, but it’s more expensive and labor intensive to do that. Now, I just grow pineapples (yummy) and passion fruit (even more yummy). They ripen before I pick them and are better even those available elsewhere.

  4. I have a farmer’s market near me as well. I’ll post some pictures on my blog which I took. They sell mostly organic food from local farms as well as fresh bread, jams, honey and other things.
