More Fake Caviar

If you ever encounter this product in a store, don’t buy it. It isn’t real caviar. It’s some nasty fake thing filled with artificial coloring and all kinds of vile chemical stuff.

Go to your neighborhood Russian store for real caviar.

  1. How do you identify fake caviar from just looking at the jar? This information could be very useful!

Or did you take one for the team and actually try it?

    1. I tried the nasty thing!! It was super disgusting. I knew it would be but I wanted to be completely sure.

Of course, I only bought a tiny portion, not this huge jar.

Normally, the real caviar is not nearly this bright. These unnatural colors mean it’s been artificially colored. You can actually see the paint ooze out of it after a while.

  2. Um… ok so I’m a plebe, and have never had really expensive caviar – but WTF is up with the colour of the red stuff? When I’ve had it, it was more sort of smoked salmon coloured and slightly translucent.

    1. I wish. In my area, the list of Russian stores is locked up in a Russian forum that keeps refusing to accept me. They accepted my husband immediately, though. Now I keep wondering: how did they know that he is ethnically Russian and I’m not? We both have very Russian-sounding last names.

  3. I feel like such a plebian. I think Roland Caviar is delicious! Ha ha. But to be fair to myself, I wil take caviar any way I can get it. But so far, Roland is the only thing I can afford on a regualr basis! 🙂 Do you have any specific brands of Russian caviar you can recommend?

    1. I wasn’t trying to make anybody feel bad with this post! Unless it’s bought at a Russian store, caviar is hugely expensive in the US. We even subscribe to a catalogue of an American company that sells caviar because we enjoy laughing at the prices. I have no doubt that these purveyors get their caviar at a Russian store and then sell it at 20-30 times more.

I wouldn’t go anywhere but a Russian store for it. Or they have cans that look like this or like this or like this in Global Foods stores. The chances that this caviar will be fake is next to nil.

  4. Oh I know you weren’t trying to make me feel bad. I always knew deep in my heart that Roland was crap. 😉
