Rotten Ketchup

In Madrid, we found this really amazing restaurant run by a famous chef. The food they serve there is to die for. Everything was quite simple but the ingredients simply screamed freshness.

Before the beginning of the meal, the restaurant serves bread with this really amazing tomato paste. (The photo is ugly because, for some reason, my camera refused to adapt itself to the restaurant’s lighting.) The paste is made by putting a fresh, delicious tomato through a blender and not messing with it in any other way. No salt, no additives, nothing but a tomato that is so fresh it almost breathes. Delicious!

Tomato Spread

The really hilarious part of the experience, however, took place when my sister decided to research the reviews of this restaurant and discovered an angry complaint from a group of American tourists:

“And what is with this disgusting tomato paste?” they asked. “Something is seriously wrong with it. It tastes of rotten ketchup!”

I’m now wondering which state in this country has been so abandoned by nature that its inhabitants don’t recognize a fresh tomato.

Probably the same one that accepted ketchup as one of five a day fruit and veg for school meals.

  2. Clarissa,
it is so funny – you can’t make this stuff up!

Here in the US we think that fertilized eggs are people and pizza is a vegetable, as Congress informed us not too long ago .
You maybe underestimating the power of food industry lobby , which done wonders to convince us that all fresh food is insurmountably inconvenient .
It is not just vegetable (although tomato is actually a fruit) , how about Fruit Roll – Ups . My kids refer to it as ” Fruit Throw -Ups ” – proud of it, thank you .
Do you know , we feed our kids at school lunches the kind of meat substances pet food companies reject ?
Do you know that kid’s chicken nuggets are actually mechanically seperated chicken. It’s chicken nuggets, patties, and the meat in fajitas… In addition the processed frozen chicken in stores is made from this…
Basically , the entire chicken is smashed and pressed through a sieve… bones, eyes, feet, guts and all. Then because it’s crawling with bacteria, it will be washed with ammonia, and soaked in it.. Then because it taste gross it is reflavored artificially. Finally , since it is weirdly colored like ‘Pepto Bismol’ pink, it is dyed with artificial color.. This is what people eat and feed to their children…
Why? Because we live in America, where people, who have been elected to public office, do not believe in climate science, but do believe pizza is a vegetable!

      – That’s exactly what the problem is. People have bought into this, that’s what is so sad.

“Do you know , we feed our kids at school lunches the kind of meat substances pet food companies reject ?”

      – Well, pets actually have rights around here, so I’m not surprised.

“Do you know that kid’s chicken nuggets are actually mechanically seperated chicken. ”

      – Even looking at these “nuggets” scares me. I hate dogs but I wouldn’t even feed them to a dog because that would be outright animal cruelty.

      – I knew the shit was bad but I had no idea it was this bad. Then why people buy it? Because it’s cheap? Surely, better things can be found at a cheap price?

      1. First the video on the kids not knowing fresh vegetables is real and not a joke.

Second. Most chicken nuggets, 70% of hamburgers and almost all the meat in school children’s free lunch meals in America are made out of what is called “pink slime” which is the chemical processing of inedible meat renderings ( dog food) with ammonia and other industrial chemicals. Words can’t describe it so watch the following video of the manufacture of nuggets.

      2. The white powder stuff is the commercial batter. You don’t want to know what’s in it. The runny white stuff is the gluten that adheres the batter to the pink slime like a glue and you don’t want to know what’s in that either.

Now you understand why America is the only developed country with a declining life expectancy.

        1. This is disgusting. What possesses people to eat this stuff? I’ve seen people whose household income is over $200,000 serve these vile nuggets to children. So it’s not always the issue of money.
