Questions: are these real? Are they legal? Can I use them to defend myself from neighbors’ dogs that ILLEGALLY run around in public areas unleashed?

      – Yes.

      – Exactly. The word means whatever we want it to mean. Just like any form of collective identity.

      – No, this is reality. This is how it was long before anybody heard of neo-liberalism. Once again, I highly recommend Tirso de Molina’s Don Gil where a woman performs masculinity far more convincingly and successfully than any of the men.

      – What the author forgets to mention is that these rituals are not only different but often the exact opposite of each other in different cultures. The world doesn’t consist of a single society.

      – And now reductive stupidity has started. Why am I not surprised?

  6. BERKELEY, CA — A truck driver was beaten within an inch of his life by California Highway Patrol for not signing a traffic ticket that he could not read. The driver, who broke no laws, was beaten so badly that he woke up in a trauma hospital.

    Olegs Kozacenko, a local resident originally from Russia, was pulled over and cited by police for allegedly driving too many hours in one day. Kozacenko refused to sign the ticket because he had not or could not read it.

    CHP Officers didn’t take kindly to the driver’s refusal to sign. Two officers, one of them a trained fist-boxer, beat Kozacenko on the side of the highway nearly to death. He suffered a crushed left orbital eye socket, multiple facial fractures, a broken left arm, broken ribs, a concussion, loss of consciousness, and possible neurological damage. His injuries caused a deprivation of oxygen for a prolonged period of time.

    Photographs taken of Kozacenko’s unconscious body showed that he was in handcuff restraints. A toxicology report showed a 0.00% blood-alcohol content of the driver; perfectly clean.

    “The public if they get stopped and simply comply with what they are asked to do, they have nothing to fear, nothing to fear at all,” said Acting Chief Ken Hill.

    Officers Andrew P. Murrill and Jim Sherman maintained that the force was not excessive. Both are still on the job a full 2 years after the incident. Olegs Kozacenko suffers long-term physical and emotional injuries and is no longer able to work.

      These are the kind of sentences that signal a serious problem when coming from an institution of power. This is a fucking threat and one that has been used by quite a few totalitarian regimes over the course of history.

  7. All the other commenters had so many interesting stories to share… but back to the dog thing. I would check with your local police, but if a dog rushes at you and you think it will attack, I imagine you could easily claim that the use of the weapon (pepper spray) was in self-defense.
    I can’t stand it when people let their dogs off leash. If I am walking alone, I am not that concerned, because these dogs are usually fine with people, but I am usually encountering them when I walk my own dog, and they are not fine with other dogs, nor is my dog fine with them.
    I don’t think there’s a high chance that you’d need to use the pepper spray, but I do have this theory that if you own the pepper spray and know you have it available if necessary, you will seem more confident around the dogs, making it even more likely that the dogs will leave you alone.

    (caveat: the Daily Mail is the funnest, most interesting newspaper in the world, but doesn’t have the reliability of some other, more boring newspapers, still in this case the basic facts seem to match other accounts)

    This is a line in the sand for me. I don’t care how much a person feels like a woman inside, if that person has a male package then there’s no need for them to go flashing their junk at young women and teenage girls. Some googling around indicates that an encouraging amount of trans people have a low opinion of Francis’s actions as well.

    1. This is somehow suggesting that it is more upsetting to little girls to see adult male genitalia than to see adult female genitalia. I think that pedophiles of either gender are equally distressing to children. This is not a trans issue. This is a pedophilia issue.

      1. I mgiht agree about very young girls but in this case they were IIRC young teens so I think that yeah,a 45 year old man’s junk is going to be more upsetting.

        And I kind of doubt that the person in question is a “real” trans person but more likely a middle aged man with cross dressing and exposure fetishes that he’s found an easy and legal way to fulfill.

        1. I agree that this a pedophile. The whole issue would be easier to avoid if people took the invasion of children’s personal space more seriously.

          As for what is more upsetting, this will depend on early traumas and will be different for everybody. For me, at any age, naked adult women invading my space would be more disturbing. Of course, I’m sure that for many people it would be different.

          As a child, I encountered a few male flashers, and that was mostly funny to me. I also once visited a public female bathing facility and I still have nightmares about that.

  10. If the dog start attacking, it’s one thing.

    However, if not, its’ owners may well be able to summon you to court. Even if law in the end will be on your side. Or, try to do something unpleasant to you themselves.

    And last, I would be afraid that if one of the dogs is dangerous, the spray may provoke it to attack. One reads about pits in US attacking while being stabbed with knifes, shot at, etc till killed.

    What are the dogs doing to you and what breeds are they?

    1. Recently, this huge black animal started roaming the area around my house and preventing me from walking outside at night. I don’t know breeds but it comes up to my thighs it is so tall. If I could figure out who it belongs to, I’d talk to the owner. But this dog is let out alone. And it seems obsessed with me, always trying to follow me into my house. This is very annoying because it is crucial that I get to take walks now that I’m stuck at home all day long with no physical activity because of the weather.

  12. Pepper spray is legal in all 50 states. In two states you have to purchase from a registered firearm dealer. In Wisconsin, Michigan and California there are legal restrictions to size.
