I just read in this new book I’m reading that defeated people bleed out through three wounds: guilt, shame, and fear.
This sounds just about right.
Well then, this means I have spent a lot of time as a Defeated One. Which would explain why, before I became Defeated, I had the sense that I was fighting for my life!

It follows that people who try to provoke feelings of guilt, fear and shame in you want to defeat you. Even if they claim that they are trying to help.

It’s very interesting that the defeated feel guilty, isn’t it? The ones with the least power feel the most overwhelming guilt.

Guilt is often the only way to achieve an illusion of control.

Yes, but deeper than that there is the belief that absolute control is really possible — something engendered by a miswiring in our biological natures.

Btw, can one feel shame without guilt? Rationally, if you aren’t guilty, why would you feel ashamed? Is guilt a shame directed towards oneself?
