Introverts vs Extroverts

Still no Internet in our house, so here is another flash of brilliance from your favorite blogger.

Many people think that introverts are bad at interpersonal communication. This is a silly stereotype. I’m an ultra-introvert who can talk up a storm, can be the life of the party and can handle people better than a bunch of lifelong extroverts. My sister is another introvert who has turned her phenomenal interpersonal skills into a career and is kicking ass at it.

The real difference is that extroverts gain energy from communication with people and introverts lose energy from it.

If you say, “I’m so tired, I need a break. I’m going out with friends”, you are an extrovert.

If you say, “I’m exhausted, I need to rest. I need to be alone for a while”, you are an introvert.

Easy peasy.

  1. Then there’s the problem where you have to be both …

I’m in a situation where I need to observe people in a specific set of locations I’m visiting, simply because I will need to call upon how they say things and how they do things. It’s a series of details that will matter when it comes to “saying all the names correctly”, like a good World Citizen (or at least like the Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Sylvain simulacrum of one).

This forces me to wear myself down with social interactions simply because I need to interact with the environment, even though everything is telling me that I’d be more at ease back at the hotel, maxing the crappy hotel Wi-Fi, with a few airplane bottles of Irish whiskey.

I can be “the most interesting man in the room” in most rooms, but that doesn’t mean I tend to enjoy being put on the spot for performance theatre …

  2. I wish *everybody* knew this. When I discovered that I was not at all shy or anti-social, but rather extremely introverted, it changed my life and my self-perception. Introverts are some of the most loyal, perceptive, and intelligent people you’ll find. I’d love to see our society come to value introversion and its strengths more!
