They Are Not Learning Anything

I’m getting very tired of reading and hearing endless interviews by leading Republicans who bellyache about the horror of Trump and the damage he is doing to the party. They are either dumb or dishonest or both. If they were really upset by the hijacking of their brand by a populist incompetent, they’d start working. And by working I mean, quite literally, doing the job voters pay them very handsomely to do.

Voters keep hearing that there is yet another deadlock in Congress about the budget, about the Supreme Court nomination, about everything and anything else, and they begin to get attracted to somebody who is not associated with this narrative of failure and pathetic ineptitude. Most people don’t understand or care about the intricacies of Supreme Court nominations. But they can’t help being annoyed by yet another story of very overpaid people not managing to get things done.

Obviously, I’m not justifying anybody who supports Trump. I’m pointing out that a Congress that is overrun by a bunch of whiny and recalcitrant impotents is getting on everybody’s nerves. There is absolutely no reason  whatsoever for anybody to oppose the nomination of this Merrick or Garrick or whatever character who looks more anodyne than a door knob.

If I did my job half as badly as these clowns do theirs, I would have no job. And there is an increasing number of people in this country who agree. I’m sophisticated enough not to let my resentment of the clowns to lead me to support Trump but many people simply aren’t.

  1. The people who support Trump support this particular (non)action. Look they voted their Congresspeople into office and reelected them, even after their multiple budget tantrums so they must want gridlock and obstructionism. Rubio could have had a nice sinecure for many years if he had put any effort into his job as a Senator or bothered to run again. But he didn’t.

They’re mainly worried that they may lose seats or be primaried. People who don’t follow downstream races may simply vote against R because of its association with Trump, knowing nothing else. He is a self promotion machine only for himself. That’s “the damage.”

I’m not sure. People seem to be remarkably bad at drawing connections between who they vote for during elections and how the government functions in between elections. They’ll complain about gridlock but blame it on “Washington”, rather than on the obstructionists they voted for.

    1. I wish more people voted in regional elections and did it consciously. But most just prefer to stew with resentment and foist Trump on us in revenge.

    2. I refuse to believe people who follow politics enough to vote in Congressional midterms are too stupid to make this connection. If they don’t make this connection, they must not want to.

  3. A major part of the problem is this …

MSM and most pundits do not make the distinction as to which Party in a TWO Party form of government is running/leading Congress!

The Congress we have today is the 114th Congress …the Congress before it was the 113th Congress.

    BOTH are GOP/Republican led.

BOTH are ranked “The WORST Congress’ in US history based on lack of productivity and performance.

THAT is the story … not this generic “Congress” is bad story line.

The “average” voter does not make this distinction … for obvious reasons!

Those responsible with reporting accurate and factual information … don’t!

    1. You are absolutely right. Most voters don’t make that distinction at all. They just know that the Congress isn’t functioning but the knowledge of who is obstructing is not really mainstream.

It is crucial not to overestimate how knowledgeable regular voters are about the political process.
