Not Funny

Maddow is making fun of the decrepit aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov that Russia sent to Syria. Yes, it’s hilarious until you remember that the goal of sending the carrier there is to launch more aircrafts to kill more Syrians. Decrepit or not, Russian weapons are devastating an already miserable country. And that’s not in the least funny.

  1. Well, Maddow can’t talk about anything Obama’s done in Syria (because he hasn’t done anything except try to stay out of Russia’s way), and she doesn’t want to talk about how much contempt Hillary actually has for Obama’s international fecklessness, so she’s reduced to ridiculing Putin’s military — which is currently winning the conflict for Assad.

  2. Nothing I’ve seen about any of the anti-Assad groups suggests that they’d be improvements on the Assad regime.

Probably the optimal (terrible but less so than the other options) is for the government forces to take control of the country and Assad being replaced. The second lest terrible is for Assad to win (I hate myself for writing that, but…).

I’d almost welcome any intervention to put a stop to what’s going on except that I assume Russia is just bombing everything in sight and who cares how many civilians get killed in the process.

At the heart of the problem is that the middle east (sense largu) has undergone a population explosion over the last sixty to seventy years and is outstripping its carrying capacity which is going to create lots and lots more conflicts even if outsiders were to leave them alone (which they won’t).

The real problems will start when Egypt starts to collapse under the weight of several times too many people (for the carrying capacity of the country and the miserable educational and social norms).
