It’s unbelievable that alarmist moans related to Merkel’s very boring and run-of-the-mill campaign statement would pollute my news feed for quite this long.

That’s actually a pretty radical thing for a German CDU politician to say. There is a chunk of the German electorate (mostly older, entirely in the former West Germany, very loyal CDU voters) that feels the US freed them from the Nazis and saved them the Soviets and that Germany must be eternally grateful to the US for that. What she said would be nothing special coming from the Left, the Greens, or the Social Democrats, but it’s just not the sort of thing that comes from the CDU.
