A lady at the park asked me if I’m Klara’s babysitter. I neither dress not act youthful, so I’m thinking she must have thought I’m one of those foreign au pairs one sees in TV shows set in New York. It’s got to be the accent, right? Because there’s nothing else.
It was fashionable for older homemakers to babysit back in the day. Just remember that some of the folks where you live are still stuck in the 1950s.

When I worked in downtown Chicago in the early nineties, there seemed to be a trend among wealthy professional couples of hiring middle-aged live-in nannies from Eastern Europe. The ones I knew about personally sent a large percentage of their wages home to support the families that had remained. Don’t know if that’s still a thing, but maybe that’s what your acquaintance had in mind? Not exactly an “au pair” situation, though.

We are very far from Chicago, though. The only immigrants around here are professors and doctors.
